What's an Onboarding Process?

Updated: Jul 19, 2022

Onboarding Process… do you have one?

In this blog post I'll go through what an Onboarding Process is, the benefits of having one and examples of what you can include.

This may all sound like a lot of work BUT I do all this with Dubsado (a client management system that saves me on the daily!) Dubsado does most of the onboarding tasks for me automatically, keeping my admin work to the minimum (and not adding extra tasks on my never ending to do list!) My clients get a smooth start to working with me and I get to work at my most productive by not having to go back and fourth collecting information or chasing payments! It's a win win! What is an Onboarding Process?

An onboarding process is from the first point of contact with a potential client all the way through to you starting your service with them. This is the clients first impression of working with you, it lays out what they can expect with working with you and anything you need then to do. In short it’s the process of taking the client from a warm lead to the start of you beginning to do the work for them.

Benefits of an Onboarding Process...

It let’s you figure out if you're a good fit to work with someone, having a Discovery Call within your process really helps with this! I love having a Zoom Call with leads as it lets me get a real feel for them and their business. It also helps me learn about their business and their struggles to see how I can best support them! You can gather all relevant information from the client for you to be efficient at getting the work done. I find using a 'new client' questionnaire works best for me, where I can gather their passwords, brand colours and fonts, logo and find out what's the best way to communicate with them.

You can tell your client what to expect and when by including a time line. You can layout any work they need to do and when they need to get it to you by along with letting them know when you will get work completed.

Having a set onboarding process makes sure you don’t miss out any steps when starting to work with a client....saving you time in the long run!

Ideas of what you can include within your Onboarding Process...

  • Lead Capture Form

  • Discovery Call

  • Pricing / Packages

  • Contract

  • Payment

  • Welcome Guide / Email

  • Timeline

  • Onboarding Questionnaire (for you to gather any relevant information you need)

Every business is unique so figure out what works best for you, your business and your lifestyle! There is no right or wrong way to run you business.

If you are looking to automate your onboarding process but have no idea where to start?
